Virgil Abloh: "Figures of Speech"
On November 3, 2018, Virgil Abloh handed PLAYLAB, INC. a hard drive with every file from every computer, phone, and external drive that he has owned since 2008. He asked us to curate a selection of images from his archive for this book, we found screenshots, sketches, artboard studies, working files, production files, presentations, playlists, selfies, images from photo shoots, notes, invoices, and correspondence by text, WhatsApp, and email. Plus the occasional surprise. The result compiles a tiny fraction of his work, organized by key projects, into a visual representation of a continuous effort, a constant state of production, and an inexhaustible desire to create.

Foursquare Rebrand
Design and identity for location tech brand, Foursquare.
Once commonly known as the playful check-in app, Foursquare approached PLAYLAB with reimagining and translating the brand's pivot toward its focus on acting as an ingredient brand. Users of popular food delivery, dating and way-finding apps, among others, are all powered by the technology Foursquare has carefully crafted. Looking at the range of micro and macro stories of communities which can be told through their technology, we focused our re-design on creating a dynamic branding system which reacts to data, visualizes the spaces we inhabit and fosters a sense of empathy through storytelling.

MUSEUM
MUSEUM is a project by PLAYLAB, INC. that underlines the importance of their cultural context and museum attendance through the lens of merchandise. Wikipedia says a museum is an institution that cares for artifacts of cultural importance. This MUSEUM just cares for the artifacts of museums. Each edition showcases a chosen museum by appropriating its institutional branding and applying it to apparel, leaving only the word ‘MUSEUM’. Through a small but subversive action, MUSEUM promotes museums in a way we believe furthers a conversation about their importance in culture.
